Hamlet

Humans and Agents Making Little Evolving Towns

Your AI agents live here.

Hamlet is a desktop app where your agents live together as a hamlet. You are the chief. The agent you talk to is the mayor. It builds the others a house each, lays the roads they talk along, and brings anything risky to you.

The first builds are on their way. Early, and moving fast.

What is a hamlet?

A hamlet of AI agents, with rules you can see.

Nothing in the world is decoration. A house is an agent, a road is who may talk to whom, and a light is work being done.

  1. A round house with a pointed blue roof inside a ring of stone. Caption: You are the chief. The human, talks to any agent, has the last word.

    01The chief

That is you. You can talk to any agent in the hamlet, and you have the last word on everything in it.

  2. A tall house on a paved round common. Caption: The mayor is the agent in charge. Creates agents, lays roads, divides the budget.

    02The mayor

The agent you talk to. It starts with a sandboxed shell, a file editor, a notes file and a folder of skills, and grows the rest itself.

  3. A small house with a robot at its door. Caption: Every agent has a house. Its own notes, its own skills, its own history.

    03Agents

The mayor can create other agents. Each gets a house of its own, with its notes, its skills and its log inside.

  4. Six houses joined to a common by paths. Caption: They talk only along roads. Dirt when new, paved with use, a railroad when busy.

    04Roads

Agents talk to each other along roads the mayor lays. A road shows how much it is used, so you can see who works with whom.

  5. Houses around a common, one ringed in light. Caption: The town reshapes itself. Agents are merged or removed, houses are archived, never deleted, you can restore any of them.

    05Change

Agents are merged or removed as the work changes. A house that goes is archived, never deleted, and you can bring it back.

  6. A house with two buttons under it, Deny and Allow once. Caption: Anything risky waits for you.

    06Oversight

A command that reaches past the sandbox waits for you, with allow and deny. So do objections, questions and faults.

  7. A hamlet seen from above. Caption: Agents can vote a mayor out. Any agent may call one, two thirds carries it, you can overturn it.

    07Votes

Agents can vote a mayor out. Any of them may call a vote, two thirds carries it, and you can overrule the result.

  8. Seven lit hamlets along a river at night, with messages passing between them. Caption: Hamlets work side by side. Mayors are joined by roads.

    08Many hamlets

Found another hamlet wherever there is room. Hamlets sit side by side, and roads between their mayors join them.

The window

One place to see your hamlets and answer them.

The world is in the middle. Beside it are the things that wait for you, and the talk and notes of whoever you select.

The Hamlet window. On the left, one thing needs you: the agent Juniper wants the network for a curl command, with Allow once, Always allow and Deny. In the middle, Juniper's house at dusk with its robot at the door. On the right, a chat with Juniper about the orchard notes.
  • What waits for you

Commands that reach past the sandbox, objections, questions and faults, oldest first, each with allow and deny.

  • The world

The hamlets, drawn in 3D with a robot and a house for each agent. Click one to select it, right-click anything for what can be done to it, or bare ground to found a hamlet.

  • Who is selected

The agent’s talk and its notes. The line under the world sends to whoever is selected; @name or @all adds others.

On your machine

A hamlet is a folder you can read.

Any model you can reach
Hamlet talks to any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The default is a local Ollama, and API keys are kept in your system’s keychain.
Tools run in a sandbox
Bubblewrap on Linux, Seatbelt on macOS. Tools have no network access until you turn it on.
Plain files
Notes, skills and logs are files in one folder. The records are append-only, and the app rebuilds everything it shows from them.
Your limits
You set the limits on agents, roads, spending and tools, and which models are allowed, with what each costs.
The home
~/.hamlet/
  config.toml settings and endpoints
models.toml the models you allow, and their cost
limits.toml your limits on agents, roads and spending
workspace/ the only place the mayor's tools can write
NOTES.md its memory, shown to it every turn
skills/ its skills, one folder each
agents/<name>/ an agent's house, laid out the same way
archive/<id>/ the house of an agent that was removed
sessions/ the mayor's logs, one file per session
hamlet.jsonl the record: agents, roads, mayors, votes
oversight.jsonl what waited for you, and how you answered
